The iconic smart brand has left thirstier rivals trailing in its wake after winning a top award and earning two other commendations in Britain’s newest and largest car owner survey.

It was not only voted Britain’s ‘Most Economical’ brand in the 2013 National Awards, but its trendsetting smart fortwo took a Highly Commended title in the ‘Best City Car’ category and a Commended in the ‘Best Petrol Car’ section of the same awards. If that wasn’t praise enough for the brand which revolutionised urban motoring, the survey results also gave smart a top five placing in the ranking of ‘Most Exciting Cars to Drive’.

The National Awards are based on the views of over 58,000 owners and cover almost every car currently on sale in Britain.  Awarding its ‘Most Economical Manufacturer’ title to smart, the online car review site said: “With fuel economy in such high prominence these days, car owners clearly care greatly about what they get to the gallon. smart tops the list as the most economical brand in the view of those who drive the nippy little cars, with the highest rating out of 40 brands and over 58,000+ owner reviews.”

The smart fortwo’s compact design  ?  “nothing else on the market is as easy to park in a tight urban space,” said the judges  ?  earned it praise in the ‘Best City Car’ segment, while its top three placing in the ‘Best Petrol Car’ section was described as “A stunning success and a big result for the smallest make of petrol car on the UK market.”

Motoring writer Sue Baker, Editor in Chief of the awards, said: “The awards honour cars that have emerged as the best and most significant in their categories from the verdicts of the most expert and experienced judges of all – tens of thousands of actual owners who pay for, drive and live with their cars day in, day out and over millions of miles. So, all the winning cars in these inaugural National Awards have proven their merit in real world use by owners who have subjected them to the harshest test of all: daily life, trial by family and the rigours of urban, rural and motorway endurance on roads throughout Britain.”

Commenting on smart’s success, Robert East, Manager, smart operations, added: “This is a great result for smart and we’re particularly delighted to have become the first to win the prestigious new ‘Most Economical Manufacturer’ award. Competition in the urban car market has never been fiercer, but this result really shows just how much our owners love the smart brand.”
