Today’s launch of the smart fortwo cdi provides the perfect solution for car buyers seeking to drive down their motoring costs in the current economic climate.

The UK’s first diesel smart is the world’s most efficient production car and sets the benchmark for low emissions and pocket-pleasing economy. Emitting just 88g/km of CO2, the new model is road tax exempt and returns a staggering 85.6 miles per gallon on the combined fuel cycle.

Enabling the smart fortwo cdi to be so environmentally-compatible is an advanced three-cylinder common-rail diesel engine, which develops a healthy 45bhp and offers excellent performance around town or on longer journeys.

An extremely compact turbocharger enables cdi owners to enjoy 110Nm of torque from 2,500rpm, making the smart ideal for the uncompromising demands of urban driving in particular. A new five-speed, semi-automatic transmission allows drivers to switch between fully automatic and manual modes according to their mood and the traffic situation.

Dermot Kelly, Managing Director Mercedes-Benz, said: “The new smart cdi is not only the greenest production car on the road but it also benefits from the same class-leading safety features and cavernous boot space as the rest of the smart fortwo range.  Add this to the phenomenal fuel economy and it’s clear that the smart cdi is the ultimate eco-solution for today\'s driver.”

The latest smarts are far more accommodating than ever before too, with a larger boot and more room inside the cabin.  Passengers can also enjoy comfier seats, upgraded trim and a revised dashboard layout with a more efficient ventilation system.

Prices for the new smart fortwo cdi start from £8,971.91 on-the-road and the car is available through the Mercedes-Benz retail network.  For more information on smart log onto
