smart, the ultra-cool automotive brand, has received even more independent endorsement from motoring and consumer organisations.

A 1999 smart city-coupé was among a number of used cars of various ages crash tested by DEKRA, the German automotive safety and testing organisation.  The tests simulated real-life car accidents that happen every day on the roads.

In a 32 mph offset head-on collision, the smart’s steel TRIDION safety cell was able to absorb most of the impact and the city-coupé was the only model not to be written off after the crash tests were complete.

The tests were reported in Auto Express and its German sister publication, Auto Bild.

Commenting on the results, David Johns, Editor in Chief of Auto Express, said: “The photographs speak for themselves.  I would much rather my kids drove a tiny smart than some other larger models.”

Meanwhile, Which?, the publication of the Consumers’ Association, have published the results of a survey of more than 32,000 cars.  The results show that smart owners in the sample have never been let down by their cars and smart has a record of 100% reliability.

The iconic brand was also shown to be a breakdown-free drive, with owners reporting their cars to be totally dependable.

The full results of the survey will be published in October’s Which? Car 2003/04.

Commenting on the most recent endorsements, Jeremy Simpson, Head of smart in the UK, said: “Customers’ response to smart this year has been phenomenal; with more cars sold in the first six months of 2003 than in the whole of 2001.  This type of independent positive affirmation is great news for those who have already chosen to buy into the smart experience.  With the imminent launch of the smart roadster, I’m certain we’ll see even more showroom activity in the second half of the year.”

Customers can get more information about smart by calling the freephone number 0808 000 8080, by visiting the web site at, or by contacting their local smart sales centre.
